“Before Hawkins, there was Marion.” With that line, Netflix today announced Stranger Things Other Worlds, officially titled Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure. The announcement came on November 6, Stranger Things Day, and confirms the Duffer Brothers’ franchise will continue in live action after the original series ended.
Just don’t expect to see Eleven, Mike or Dustin. This time, the story heads back to the 1950s, long before anything happened in Hawkins.
The Other Worlds Teaser
The video is short, but it drops several clues. It shows an abandoned bike at night near a restricted area, the lights of a town in the distance and a strange disturbance in the sky. “Sh-Boom” by The Chords plays in the background, a song already heard in season 5. It also shows a key date: April 19, 1955.
What Is Stranger Things Other Worlds About?
Other Worlds is a prequel set in Marion, Nevada, in 1955. It will feature new characters, villains and mythology, though the Duffers say it will keep connections to the original series.
One of those connections is already confirmed. According to Matt Duffer, the series will explain the origin of the mysterious rock young Henry Creel finds in a Nevada cave, the same one featured in the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow and in season 5. Since Henry later becomes Vecna, this detail could answer several questions the series left open.
The story takes place a few years before The First Shadow, which is set in 1959. That makes Other Worlds a prequel to both the series and the play.
Who’s Behind Stranger Things Other Worlds
- Showrunner: Kate Trefry, a Stranger Things writer since season 2 and author of the Tony-winning play The First Shadow.
- Creators: Kate Trefry and Matt and Ross Duffer.
- Director: Joe Wright, known for Pride & Prejudice and Atonement, who will direct the first three episodes.
- Production: The Duffers’ Upside Down Pictures and Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps Entertainment.
Putting Trefry in charge makes a lot of sense. She wrote Henry Creel’s backstory in The First Shadow, so nobody knows that part of the story better.
When Does It Premiere?
Netflix confirmed Other Worlds will premiere in 2028, with no exact date yet. The cast hasn’t been announced, and according to reports, filming would start in 2027 in New Mexico.
It’s also worth remembering this isn’t the franchise’s only project in the works. There’s also Tales From ’85, the animated series set between seasons 2 and 3. So even though Eleven’s story is over, Netflix clearly has plans for Stranger Things for a long time to come.
